M: It's almost dinner time and Papa is preparing a soup. / Es casi hora de cenar y Papá está preparando una sopa.
P: But I am hungry! / ¡Pero tengo hambre!
M: Dinner is almost ready. / La cena está casi lista.

M: Ok. While the soup cools down a bit, you can have some celery as an appertizer. / Vale. Mientras la sopa se enfría un poquito, podéis comer apio de aperitivo.
P: But Cachorrito doesn't like celery. / Pero a Cachorrito no le gusta el apio.

Later, talking with my husband about this, he told me that he had to go to the store to buy some ingredients for Cachorrito's lunch because she had a clear idea of what she wanted to eat: Broccoli.
Más tarde, hablando con mi marido sobre esto, me contó que había tenido que ir a la tienda a comprar ingredientes para la comida de Cachorrito, porque tenía una idea muy clara sobre lo que quería comer: Brocoli.

El sistema sanitario canadiense / The Canadian health system
En su día dije que hablaría del sistema sanitario canadiense y lo prometido es deuda.
Back in the day, I said that I would talk about the Canadian health system and I will do as promised.
Lo primero que hemos de tener en cuenta es que aquí existe sanidad pública, pero no universal. Ni siquiera pagar la seguridad social cada mes te da derecho a la atención pública de forma inmediata. No es hasta tres meses después de estar cotizando que obtienes el derecho a la asistencia pública.
The first thing to take into consideration is that here there is a public health system but it is not universal. Not even paying the social insurance every month grants you the right to use the public health system immediately. You get the right of using the public health system only if you have been paying your fees for three months.
En pocas palabras, los tres primeros meses tras tu llegada al país tienes dos opciones: Seguro privado o no ponerte enfermo.
Keeping it short, you only have two options during the first three months after your arrival: A private insurance or not getting sick.
En ese sentido, no puedo quejarme porque mi empresa pagaba ese seguro privado durante los tres primeros meses. Si no, no hubiera cogido el trabajo.
When it comes to this, I cannot complain because my company paid the private insurance for the three first months. Otherwise, I would not have accepted the job.
Lo siguiente a tener en cuenta es que aquí no te asignan médico, te lo has de buscar tú. Así dicho, puede sonar fácil, incluso bien. Eliges el médico que más te convenza y listo.
The next thing to take into consideration is that you don't get a doctor assignment. You have to find your own doctor. In theory, it might sound easy, even good. You choose the doctor that you like the best and done.
Pues no. Tienes que buscar un médico que acepte nuevos pacientes y esos escasean. Uno de los grandes problemas sanitarios de este país es la falta de personal sanitario, porque sólo cruzando la frontera a Estados Unidos cobran mucho más.
Not the case. You have to find a doctor who is accepting new patients and those are scarce. One of the main problems that this country faces when it comes to the health system is the lack of health professionals because they only need to cross the border to the United States to earn much more money.
Otra consecuencia de esa situación es que no hay pediatras suficientes, por lo que son considerados especialistas a los que recurrir una vez tus hijos han pasado por el médico de familia. Algunos pediatras admiten pacientes, en el sentido en el que nosotros entendemos un pediatra, pero no son fáciles de encontrar, especialmente en el centro de la ciudad.
Another consequence of this situation is the lack of paediatricians, who are treated as specialist for whom you need a referral from the family doctor. Some paediatricians accept new patients in the way we understand a paediatrician would but they are not easy to find, especially downtown.
El médico de familia es quien debe referirte a un especialista o mandarte pruebas médicas. En ambos casos, son reticentes y no te citan para recoger resultados. Si te pasa algo, ya te llamarán. Conozco un par de casos en los que no habían llamado a personas con problemas ginecológicos graves. Se enteraron porque no se encontraban bien e insistieron en recibir los resultados.
The family doctor is the one who will refer you to the specialist or medical tests. In both cases, they don't book you an appointment to give you the results. If you have something, they call you. I know a couple of cases in which the people had not been contacted although they had important gynaecologic problems. They found out because they felt bad and insisted in getting the results.
Nosotros tuvimos suerte, dentro de todo. Justo al lado de mi trabajo acababan de abrir una clínica nueva y nos enrolamos en bloque. Las niñas no tienen pediatra, pero el médico de familia les ha hecho sus revisiones, puesto vacunas y mandado al especialista cuando tocaba.
We have been lucky considering the circumstances. A new clinnic just opened next to the office when we arrived and we joined it as a family. The girls don't have a paediatrician but the family doctor has done their revisions, taken care of their shots and sent them to the specialist when needed.
Nuestra experiencia con urgencias se limita a mi accidente de enero y debo confesar que no me quedé muy contenta. Eso de marcharte del hospital sabiendo que tienes huesos rotos, que igual te han de operar y que el médico que te ha atendido te diga que no sabe ler radiografías no suena muy profesional.
Our experience with the emergency services is just the one related to the accident that I had in January and I have to confess that I am not too happy. Leaving the hospital knowing that you have some broken bones, that you might need to go under the knife and having been attended by a doctor who confesses you that she doesn't know how to read a radiography doesn't sound too professional.
También podría hablar sobre el hecho de que no me hicieron ningún tipo de test de embarazo antes de hacerme radiografías, a pesar de haberles avisado de que podía estar embarazada.
I could also talk about them taking radiographies without running any pregnancy test although I had told them that I might be pregnant.
El seguimiento posterior estuvo bien, aunque considero que me hicieron más radiografías de las necesarias.
The follow up after the surgery was good, although I think that I didn't need so many radiographies.
Por otro lado, si el seguro no te cubre, sólo necesitas un poco de mala suerte para incurrir en gastos médicos astronómicos. Un compañero fue al hospital porque llevaba un tiempo encontrándose mal y ver a dos médicos, hacerse un electrocardiograma, un análisis de sangre y uno de orina le costó 7,000 CAD.
On the other hand, if you don't have an insurance, you just need to be a bit unlucky to run into an astronomical bill. A co-worker wen to the hospital because he was not feeling well lately and being checked by two doctors, an electrocardiogram, blood and urine analytics costed him CAD 7,000.
Me gusta más que el modelo Estadounidense, sin duda, pero me quedo con mi sanidad española de calle.
I like it better that the United States model for sure but I would no doubt choose my Spanish health system.

Invierno en Canadá / Winter in Canada
Vamos de camino al verano, pero no quiero dejar de contaros cómo fue nuestro invierno y cómo afectó a nuestras pequeñuelas.
We are on the way to summer but I would like to talk to you about how was our winter and how it affected our kids.
El invierno empezó allá por septiembre y podemos considerar que ha dado paso a la primavera en mayo. Sí, habéis leído bien, ¡9 meses de invierno! Siempre comento que para mí lo peor del invierno aquí no son las bajas temperaturas, ¡es que no se acaba nunca!
Winter began in September and we could consider that it transitioned to Spring in May. Yes, you read right, 9 months of Winter! I always say that for me the worst of the winter here is not the low temperatures but that it never ends!
Hasta diciembre, la cosa fue más o menos suave. Podíamos llegar a -10 de mínima, pero el resto del día estábamos entre -4, -6...
Until December, the weather was more or less gentle. We could reach -10 as a minimum but the rest of the day we were between -4, -6...
Pero, tras las Navidades, llegó frío de verdad. Las cifras negtivas de dos dígitos se convirtiéron en máximas. Una vez bajamos de -20, el lago empezó a helarse. Algunos irresponsables caminaban sobre el hielo de vez en cuando (este lago es como un mar interior y, por tanto, tiene corrientes y la desidad y grosor del hielo no son constantes, por lo que podría romper en algún sitio y, si eso sucede, estás poniendo en riesgo tu vida y la de los equipos de rescate).
However, after Christmas, the true cold arrived. The two digit negative temperatures became the maximum Once we were under -20, the lake began to freeze. Some irresponsible people would walk over the ice every now and then (this lake is like an interior sea and, as a result, it has currents and the density and width of the ice are not constant, which means that it could break at some point and, if that happens, you are putting your life at risk as well as the lives of the rescue teams).
Como curiosidad os hablaré de las políticas escolares sobre las temperaturas.
As a curiosity, I will explain the school policies for the temperature:
- Si hay nieve o hace frío, sólo los niños que han llevado ropa de nieve (pantalones y botas incluidos) pueden salir al patio.
- If there is snow or it is cold, only the kids wearing snow clothes (pants and boots included) can play outisde.
- A partir de -15 grados para abajo, se considera que hace mucho frío para el patio y los niños se quedan dentro de la escuela.
- From -15 degrees and under it is considered that it is too cold for the kids to play outside and they stay indoors.
- Por las mañanas, es necesario estar atento a las alertas de frío, en las que se hace una relación de los colegios que cierran sus puertas porque se considera que la temperatura es tan extrema que los niños podrían morir de frío esperando el autobús.
- In the morning, it is a must to pay attention to the cold alerts in which they list the schools that are closed because the temperature is so extreme that they are afraid that the kids might die waiting for the bus.
- Las rutas escolares tienen la obligación de dejar a cada niño en la puerta de su casa y esperar a que el niño esté físicamente dentro de la misma para ir a la siguiente. La razón que hay detrás de esto es que, si no hay nadie en casa, el niño podría morir de frío en la puerta.
- The school bus must leave each kid at his/her doorstep and wait until the kid is inside the house before moving to the next one. The reason behind this is that, if there is nobody at home, the chikd could die at the door of his/her own home.
La salida de casa es uno de los primeros aspectos afectados por el frío invernal. Cuando los niños (y los mayores) tienen que empezar a ponerse capas de ropa, gorros, guantes, pantalones de nieve, botas de nieve... Salir de casa es un proceso que se alarga hasta el infinito y más allá.

Y luego está la vuelta, claro, porque hay que recoger y ordenar toda esa ropa y gestionar las botas que, o bien están mojadas, o hay que aclarar para que la sal que esparcen por las calles no las destrocen. A veces ambas.
And then you have to return, of course, because you have to pick and tidy up all the clothes and manage the boots which will be either wet or you´ll have to clean to get rid of the salt that are on the streets. Most times both.
Nosotros nos marcamos los -10 grados como temperatura más baja a la que bajábamos al parque con normalidad. Alguna vez hemos salido con más frío a patinar sobre hielo o a tirarnos con el trineo, pero ha sido excepcional y a todos nos parecía que hacía mucho frío, incluso con la ropa adecuada.
We decided that -10 degrees was the lowest temperature for us to go to the park as usual. Eventually, we have gone outside on colder weather to ice skate or play with the slide, but it has been exceptional because we considered that it was too clod even with appropriate clothes

Por suerte, no fue grave, pero un descuido como ése en una tempertura más baja, o con más viento, o por un tiempo más prolongado puede llevar a que la piel se necrose y se caiga, especialmente la punta de la nariz y los lóbulos de las orejas.
One day, my husband was going to pick our daughter up from school and the little one fall asleep in his arms. He didn't notice it but the wind was on the girls face and she ended up with some red areas where her skin was burned. Luckily, it was not serious but it might have been dangerous would the temperature or the wind be more intense. Sometimes the skin fades and people loose pieces of the ears and the nose.
Por otro lado, está el problema de estar encerrado en casa.
On the other hand, there is the problem of being stuck at home.
Si vives en el centro, puede utilizar los túneles para ir de un edificio a otro y andar entre zonas comerciales. Si tienes un coche, puedes ir a los centros comerciales. En cualquier caso, tiendes a pasar mucho tiempo en casa o en casa de otra gente, lo que supone espacios reducidos para los niños.
If you live down town, you can use the tunnels to go from building to building and walk throught the commercial areas. If you have a car, you can go to the mall. Anyway, you usually spend a lot of time at home or at other people's homes, which means reduced space for the kids.
Nuestra hija pequeña tenía tal exceso de energía que no conseguía echar siesta. Nunca. Es más, pedía permiso para salir al pasillo del edificio, que es bastante largo, y corría de un extremo a otro para desfogarse. La pobre me recordaba a uno de esos hamsters que viven en una jaula y corren en la rueda de marras porque, si no, les daría un chungo de aburrimiento.
Our youngest daughter had an excess of energy which avoided her from napping. Ever. Even more, she would ask permission to go to the corridor of the building, which was quite long, and run from one end to the other one to vent out. My poor little one reminded me of those hamsters who live a cage and run on the wheel because, if not, the would die of boredom.
Pero bueno, el invierno también tiene su lado bello. Las Cataratas del Niagara se helaron y, aunque no pudimos ir hasta el deshielo, seguía siendo un espectáculo impresionante.
However, Winter also has a beautiful side. The Niagara Falls froze and, although we couldn't go until they had partly melted, they were still amazing.
Patinar sobre hielo, hacer muñecos de nieve, tirarse en trineo... no son cosas que en España se puedan hacer como una salida al parque más en la mayoría de las regiones.
Ice skating, making snow men, tobogganing... are not things that you can do any time in Spain in most regions.
El invierno es tiempo de juntarse en casa de alguien y que los niñosdestrocen la casa jueguen, mientras los padres charlan y toman un café/té calentito.
Winter is the time to gather in someone's home and for the kids todestroy the place enjoy some time together while their parents chat and have a hot coffee/tea.
El invierno es hermoso y fascinante. Me encanta cuando la nieve está suelta y puedes ver cómo el viento mueve los copos y modela los montículos que se van acumulando. Me fascina ver los rompehielos cruzando el lago helado. Creo que es alucinante ver los coches como si nada en carreteras en las que en España iríamos con cadenas (aquí usan neumáticos de invierno). Por supuesto, mejor ver todo esto desde la ventana.
Winter is beautiful and fascinating. I love when the snow is loose and you can see how the wind moves the snowflakes and models snow dunes. I am fascinated by the ferries crossing the frozen lake. I think that it is amazing to see the cars driving as usual in roads that would force us to use chains in Spain (here they use Winter tires). Of course, even better to watch all these things through the window.
Mi marido no está muy animado a pasar otro invierno aquí. Fue frío, largo y duro. También creo que ha sido una experiencia vital intensa. Es una mezcla de fascinación y odio difícil de explicar.
My husband is not very keen about the Winter and doesn't want to spend another one here. It has been cold and hard. I also think that it was an intense life experience. It is a mix of fascination and hate that is hard to explain.

I think that it is amazing to see the cars driving as usual in roads that would force us to use chains in Spain (here they use Winter tires).
